Additional launch area allows you to launch applications from the sidebar by clicking the icons. You could change the background, add your own custom backgrounds, add command line arguments to links, view folders in flyouts and even create an audio playlist. The icons for all items are also changeable. For activating the menu, just click on the icon in the folder flyout.
